U.S. Italy Technology Transfer

The Italian Trade Commission invites you to an international training seminar that aims to provide concrete tools and examples to support your entrepreneurial efforts to commercialize university research by creating a start-up company.

• Target Audience: Academic Science Researchers with the potential or interest in translating their research work by creating a research spin-off / start-up company in Massachusetts or in Italy (or a partnership between the 2 regions). Industrial actors eager to meet potential new entrepreneurs!

• Discussion topics will cover public funding and private investment opportunities in MA and Italy, example local university models, and a showcase of successful international case study start-ups.

The primary goal of this initiative is to help foster collaboration in science between Europe, specifically Italy, and the USA, focusing on presenting tools that can support these objectives, such as international funding opportunities, news and reports, events/workshops and supportive services, in order to turn our cooperation effort into actual results.

We aim to assist interested research organizations (research centers, universities, companies and/or SMEs) or individual researchers, to promote their R&D capabilities; to support them in finding appropriate channels to fund their research, tools for potential partner search, identification of international S&T events, definition and fine tuning of project ideas; and to help build international project consortia to support joint research project endeavors.

OBJECTIVE: To support the strong ideas of S&T researchers and entrepreneurs who aim to create international cooperation projects between Italy and USA, encouraging either new or continued research and/or business in either country. An ICG expert international consultant will support by providing the following assistance: evaluations of project proposals and further project ideas, assistance in project planning, funding programme tools. contacts/partner search, etc., in order to foster the proposed project.

The S&T theme does not have to adhere to a particular science sector/industry, although the event last year concentrated in nano- and biotechnologies. In order to widen the scope of potentially proposed projects, this service is open to many research areas, including: Biotechnologies; Health; Nanotechnologies; ICT; Renewable Energies; Transportation and Automotive; International policies, innovation and cooperation; and any cross-disciplinary projects as well.

WHO?
Invited participants (who had attended or may not have attended the 2009 event) are encouraged to partake in this hands-on, private consultation for international cooperation. This service is directed to researchers and scientific actors, who are working to create international projects between Italy-USA.

This first online consulting service is free of charge to the inquirer/participant, and is sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission to support the continued development of international cooperation between Italy and USA in both Science and Technology research and new business.

The report aims at acquainting potential investors with the knowledge of where Italian start ups and spin offs are active or are forming throughout Italy. It includes:

• A snapshot of Italy’s R&D system
• An overview of Italy’s science parks and research centers
• A selected list of early stage companies
• An outline of some current US-Italy collaboration agreements
• A selected list of Innovation-focused events in Italy
• Information on funding programs available for Italy’s research industry
• A list of current local investors and relevant associations, which can serve as insightful local partners to foreign counterparts

Italy has registered a gradual but significant increase in R&D expenditures, and currently ranks favorably in global classifications of scientific publications and citations. Most importantly, readers will discover that the country is also displaying strong signs of acceleration in number of new enterprises, as universities and research centers are spinning out a growing number of companies, which have started to gain the attention and backing of investors. Of the 600 spin offs generated by universities over the last 8 years, half operate in the ICT sector and Life Sciences.

An expanded Second Edition of this report, to be released in 2011, will contain even further information, such as tax and legal issues faced by VCs in Italy.
